Question/Problem Description
Considerations when an OE RDBMS Adv Enterprise Edition license replaces existing database and database feature installed licenses

When the Advanced Enterprise RDBMS (AEE RDBMS) license is installed, the Enterprise RDBMS, Multi-tenant Tables, OpenEdge TDE, Table Partitioning, OpenEdge Replication, OpenEdge Management licenses are still in the progress.cfg

When an AEE RDBMS license is installed OpenEdge Management Resource Polling is disabled

When expired licenses are replaced with the AEE RDBMS license, the License Update Utility does not update the individual licenses expiry date

When the AEE RDBMS replaces an Enterprise Database has been enabled for Replication, replication fails with error:
The RDBMS license on the Source machine does not match the RDBMS license on the Target machine. (13257)

Considerations when the OE RDBMS Adv Enterprise Edition replaces existing installed licenses:

A.   OE RDBMS Adv Enterprise Edition license bundles the following independent database and features licenses as a single license with it's own Serial Number and Control Code:
  • OE Enterprise RDBMS,
  • OE Multi-tenant Tables,
  • OpenEdge TDE,
  • Table Partitioning,
  • OpenEdge Replication Plus,
  • OpenEdge Management
  • Change Data Capture for Enterprise (Since OpenEdge 11.7)
This bundle of licenses are all enabled with the R2R bits under one license, as such none are optional but post install options can disable OEM for example. The remaining features (MT, TP, TDE, CDC, OER) need to be specifically enabled against the Enterprise Database in order for them to be used. For further information refer to Article  Can you choose which Database features are installed when installing the Advanced Enterprise License?

B.   The OE Adv. Ent. RDBMS must not be installed with the bundled individual licenses

It is not possible properly run OpenEdge Servers when different licenses for the exact same product as listed above are installed (e.g Enterprise, Replication, MT, TP, OEM etc). If there are any currently installed product licenses that are included in Advanced Enterprise Edition RDBMS (AEE RDBMS), they must be removed.

For example, Databases will not startup anymore when an OE RDBMS Adv Enterprise license replaces existing installed licenses with their own sets of Serial Numbers and Control Codes:
  1. The independent database and features licenses product licenses need to be removed
  2. This "OE RDBMS Adv Enterprise Edition" needs to be installed
Remove individual licenses prior to installing the OE RDBMS Adv Enterprise License
  1. The database license and features licenses need to be removed with the License Update utility, using the REMOVE button. Refer to the screenshot in Article How to uninstall one OpenEdge product from a multi-product installation.
  2. The Advanced Enterprise Edition RDBMS (AEE RDBMS) license has to be installed using the setup.exe from the ESD download tarball. Refer to Article How to upgrade Enterprise DB to Advanced Enterprise DB ?
  3. If a Service Pack had been previously installed, it must be installed (again)
  4. If a Hotfix had been previously applied, it must be applied (again)
Remove individual licenses after installing the OE RDBMS Adv Enterprise License

When this OE Adv. Ent. RDBMS license has already been installed with or added to an install with these existing licenses, they need to be removed from the licensing configuration before starting up the OpenEdge Servers.

While individual licenses can be removed by running the License Update utility, using the REMOVE button as described above, an easier method is to swap out the license configuration file.  Importantly this method cannot be used to run licenses unless that license has previously been installed

The recommended approach is to Use the CSS portal to generate a new progress.cfg with only this site's Advanced Enterprise RDBMS license, then swap out the current progress.cfg Another method is to run the install on a different server to generate the new cfg:
  1. On another server running the same Operating System, use the OpenEdge version ESD download tarball to install only the OE RDBMS Adv Enterprise Edition together with any other licenses that are installed (excluding the bundled licenses). On Linux/Unix the install can be to a separate directory on the same machine.
  2. Swap out the progress.cfg file to the production Server
  3. No need to re-install SP and re-apply HF
C.   If an Enterprise Database has been enabled for Replication:

Prior to OpenEdge 11.7 the AEE RDBMS license also needs to be installed on the Secondary Target Server. Refer to Articles:
Prior to OpenEdge 11.7.4 and 12.0, issues with replication databases managed by the AdminServer when the AEE RDBMS license is used, review the following Articles:
D.   If an OpenEdge Management license was used, it is bundled with OE RDBMS Adv Enterprise Edition, however once installed:
  1. When the OEM Console is first accessed, it takes you to the firstuse.jsp but does not ask for a new password.
  2. Resource Polling is disabled. Re-enable these through:
Options --> Resource Monitoring, select the options for Poll resources, Generate alerts, Collect trend data, and Include status changes
