There are two ways to evaluate Progress OpenEdge:
- In the Cloud using Progress Arcade, with the OpenEdge Evaluation Kit
- On-premises by downloading the OpenEdge Evaluation Kit.
Registration for a ProgressID is required for either type of evaluation.
Components included in the OpenEdge Evaluation Kit:
- Progress Developer Studio for OpenEdge (Windows only; formerly OpenEdge Architect)
- OpenEdge Personal RDBMS
- OpenEdge Development Server (Classic Appserver)
- Progress Pacific Application Server for Development
- OpenEdge Explorer (for managing RDBMS and AppServers)
- OpenEdge BPM Studio (for Business Process Modeling and Development)
- OpenEdge Business Process Server for Development
- OpenEdge GUI Controls
- Trial copy of Telerik Winforms Controls
To Evaluate Progress OpenEdge:
- Visit the Progress home page at: www.progress.com.
- Choose Products > OpenEdge from the main menu.
- Selecting the "Try OpenEdge 11.<x>" button will navigate to the "Get Started with OpenEdge 11.<x>" page.
- From the "Get Started with OpenEdge 11.<x>" page, select either "Evaluate in the Cloud" or "Evaluate in your local environment" (using the on-premise Evaluation Kit)
- Log in with your ProgressID. If you are not already a member of the Progress community, follow the "Register" link to create a new account.
To Evaluate in the Cloud:
- Under "Published Deployments":
- Select the OpenEdge version to be evaluated. The Login and Password specified in the Description column; will be needed when connecting to the cloud server instance that will be created.
- Select: "Create".
- Enter a nickname for the deployment in the dialog window that will appear.
- Select: "Create". A new deployment will be created in the "My Deployments" section.
- Under "My Deployments":
- Select the new deployment nickname.
- Select the Start button.
- In the "Start Confirm" dialog, Select "OK"
- In the "Server Inputs for Windows Only" dialog, Select "Launch" .
- A new instance will be created in the "My Instances" section.
- Under "My Instances":
- Select the plus sign to the left of the new instance. This will open up an additional line of information.
- Wait until the status in the second line changes from "Starting" to "Running". This may take several minutes.
- Select the new instance.
- Select: "Connect".
- A window will appear containing a public DNS name for the running instance. Copy this name to the Windows clipboard. If a public DNS name is not shown, the session has timed out. Select "SHOWROOM" in the main menu at the top of the page, enter your user name (ProgressID) and password, and select "Submit". Continue again starting from Step 3.3; a public DNS name will now be displayed when you reach this step when the session has not timed out.
- From the Windows Start menu, select All Programs > Accessories > Remote Desktop Connection.
- Paste the public DNS name of the instance into the "Computer" combo box in the Remote Desktop Connection dialog.
- Select: "Connect".
- A dialog will appear in which login credentials can be entered. Enter the credentials noted in Step 1.1.
To Evaluate On-premises:
- Read the "PROGRESS SOFTWARE CORPORATION End User Product License Agreement" and Select "Accept" to continue.
- Read the information provided on the next page. Serial Number and Control Codes are needed when installing the OpenEdge evaluation kit, but a License Addendum file is not provided in the download bundle.
The Product Evaluation Serial Number and Control Codes are displayed at the top of the download page.
Make note of the Serial Number and Control Codes for the required platform; they will be needed during product installation. - Click the "HTTPS Download" or "Download Manager" button for the platform evaluation required.
- Unpack the downloaded file:
- For Windows: The downloaded file is a self-extracting zip file with the extension .exe.
- Double-click on the downloaded file in Windows Explorer.
- Note the location where the file will be unpacked and change as required.
- Select: "Unzip".
- When the file has been unpacked, click "Close".
- For Linux: The downloaded file has been compressed with the tar and gzip utilities. It has the extensions .tar.gz.
- From a shell prompt, use the gunzip and tar commands to unpack the file. Refer to operating system documentation for the available options of the gunzip and tar commands.
- Follow the installation prompts. Enter the appropriate Serial Number and Control Codes for those Progress products which you wish to evaluate, as mentioned in the Step 2 above.
To update an Evaluation Copy to a Commercial release: Since OpenEdge 10.1A the License Update tool can be used to replace the product evaluation license to a commercial release for the same product with the new set of serial numbers and control codes provided.
