To change the licensed user count of an existing Progress license:
  • Contact your Progress Sales Representative and request a new license update with the required user count (for more or less users).
  • Apply the license update with the proupdt or License Update utility. Refer to Article 000020715, What is the purpose of the proupdt utility ?
It is not possible to add licensed count units for the same license.

Example1 :  Two database licenses under maintenance for the same OpenEdge Version:

OE RDBMS serial number 6123456 with 350 licensed users
OE RDBMS serial number 6456789 with 100 licensed users
  • When both of the same License are installed at the same time (with different user counts), only the first license entered will be taken into account and seen in the progress.cfg
  • If proupdt is run after the installation, the serial number used to update replaces the existing License. License update does not append the existing user counts.
  • If you had a 350 User License installed and you wanted 250 less users, a new license for 100 users would update your existing license from 350 users to 100 users with proupdt.
  • If you had a 350 User License installed and you wanted 100 extra users, a new license for 450 users would update your existing license from 350 users to 450 users with proupdt.
  • If you need to have 450 Licensed users, you will need to contact your Progress Sales Representative to trade in the two licenses for one license of 450 users.
  • As these licenses stand, you're licensed for either 100 users or 350 users. However, if both licenses are under maintenance for the same end user, we allow you to only have one license installed and the other 'in the drawer', where you are then allowed to use the database for 450 users in accordance with your license agreement. Contact your Progress Sales Representative for further clarification.
  • While there is nothing prohibiting you from allowing 450 users to access an Enterprise database at the same time, when the existing installed license shows less users you may be in license contravention in doing so, if for example both licenses are not under maintenance for the same end user. Clarify this with your Progress Sales or Account Manager How to contact Presales Support, Sales Administration or Customer Services?.
  • If you have licenses on an Access Agent metric these will not combine with any other license.  These are always considered to be paper licenses.
Example 2: Two AppServer licenses under maintenance for the same OpenEdge Version
  • OE Appserver Enterprise serial number 6123456 with 310 Named user licenses
  • OE Appserver Enterprise serial number 6456789 with 75 Access agent licenses
These are both the same OE License: OE Appserver Enterprise, but are different licensing models
  • The Access Agent license is simply a way to license additional unknown or occasional users who access the application through the web (for example).
  • In contrast to the Concurrent Device, Registered Device or Named User licenses which must be installed during an OpenEdge installation (can be updated using proupdt) and controls how many users can connect to the AppServer, an Access Agent license is treated as a paper license (does not need to be installed). In this example the 75 Access Agents for the occasional users would not need to be installed.
  • While the Named User license must be installed, you do not need to install it Agent Access license, it just needs to be there for future audits. Contact your Progress Sales Representative for further clarification.
