Intermittent Gateway timeout when logging into the Sitefinity Admin page on Sitefinity Version 14.4

Hi, I have a Production Sitefinity Website using Sitefinity version 14.4. I sometimes receive a Gateway Timeout when logging in to the Sitefinity Admin Page.

There was no spike in Database Usage or Performance when the Gateway Timeout occurs. We also don't have any scheduled tasks set in Sitefinity.

The website was never shut down nor restarted.

What can be the cause of Gateway timeout? How do I verify it? andhow do we solve it?

The website was never shut down nor restarted ... are you sure :) If you are using IIS the default is to recycle the app pool every 29 hours

Being an intermediate issue troubleshooting can be difficult. If you have tools to monitor requests, app metrics, network monitor. This may help isolate the issue.

Also looking into the error or other Sitefinity logs can help too.

Hi @Jonathan Read (Progress Software) , thank you for your response. What is the impact of recycling the app pool every 29 hours? I'm asking this because the website has been up for 4 years, and the issue only happened in the last 3 months.

Could you advise me on the documents I can refer to on what happens in the Sitefinity app when the app pool is recycled?

    Regards,

    Eko

Restarting the application would cause a the application to need to re-cache all the pages from the frontend perspective and some backend pages too. This could result in slowness of the application. It is possible this has gone unnoticed for several years because the 29 hours happened during non-peak times. This is just a place to investigate :). You could also consider running database maintenance scripts to ensure query are performant.

Thank you @Jonathan Read (Progress Software)  for the reference. I think I forgot to mention that we use MySQL5.7 instead of SQL Server mentioned in the reference. Is there any difference/impact when we use MySQL 5.7?

    Regards,

    Eko

There very well could be. Unfortunately in my 15 years of Sitefinity I never chose to use MySQL so I can't offer any advice around trouble shooting it. Hopefully with those additional details someone else will have some experience there.
