Van Hallman (Customer) asked a question.
We are on version 8.8 of WS_FTP server. My company just informed me they want to move my WS_FTP server to a new host. What, if anything do I need to worry about here? The IP address will stay the same.

Van Hallman (Customer) asked a question.
@Van Hallman (Customer) Hi Van, the migration guide must be followed if you plan to migrate the WS_FTP Server application to a New OS/hardware.
https://community.progress.com/s/article/How-do-I-migrate-WS-FTP-Server-to-a-new-machine
Please submit a ticket with Progress Technical Support if you need to discuss any step related to Migration.
VM’s are attached to hosts. The question is do I need to worry about anything if the WS_FTP server VM is moved to a different Host server?
Thanks,
Van

interesting question. I'm late to the party but my Hyper-V admins migrated my windows server vm hosting WS_FTP Server to a completely new Hyper-V cluster on a completely new Hyper-V environment and I don't think there were any issues. Suppose you might need to keep an eye on any static MACs that you may have for the licencing and also get them to double check that the routing on the new Hyper-V environment is the same as that on the current environment

Now I need to upgrade from 8.8 to 25.02. Is there a guide for this?
25.0.2 is the same as 10.0.2. I think you can just run an in place upgrade straight to the latest version. https://community.progress.com/s/article/How-to-do-an-in-place-upgrade.
I ran an in place upgrade from 8.8.11 to 10.0.2 last month with no issues
Now my thin clients can’t connect. All other connections work just fine. My thin client logins are all part of a web transfer group. Getting the following error message:
Not sure what I am doing wrong….If I upgrade to 25.02 does that automatically reset all of the settings needed in IIS?

Upgrade COMPLETE!
congrats. Any interesting gotchas or lessons learned to share?
Hi Mark,
Numerous issues. Here is a summary and I still have one minor issue left to fix.
WS_FTP Server Upgrade Troubleshooting Session
This document captures the full troubleshooting session related to upgrading WS_FTP Server from version 8.8 to 2025.0.2 and resolving post-upgrade issues.
---
1. Initial Issue: Thin Client not working after upgrade
- Symptoms included HTTP 500 errors, “Folder not found”, and login failures.
- Identified root causes:
- Incorrect landing folder path
- Missing NTFS permissions on the actual data root
Fix:
- Granted IIS AppPool\WSFTPSVR_WTM access to E:\SFTPRoot using icacls
---
2. CleanerService Failure
- Service stuck in “Starting” state after upgrade
Root Cause:
- Missing runtime directory:
C:\ProgramData\Ipswitch\WS_FTP Server
Fix:
- Recreated directory structure
- Applied NTFS permissions
- Restarted services in correct order
---
3. Thin Client Login Failure (No response)
- Event Viewer showed:
WebService.svc activation failure
CryptographicException: Keyset does not exist
Root Cause:
- IIS application pool could not access certificate private key
Fix:
- Granted NETWORK SERVICE (or app pool identity) read access to certificate private key via certlm.msc
- Restarted IIS
---
4. Certificate Warning During Upgrade
- Warning: FTPS certificate key length < 2048 bits
Finding:
- One legacy 1024-bit certificate existed but not required
Action:
- Rebind FTPS to a 2048-bit certificate
---
5. HTTPS / Browser Warning
- Error: NET::ERR_CERT_COMMON_NAME_INVALID
Root Cause:
- URL hostname did not match certificate CN
Fix:
- Used correct DNS name: https://ftp.domainfolder.domain.com
---
7. Version Verification
WS_FTP Server Version:
- ProductVersion: 2025.0.2
- FileVersion: 10.0.2.56
Command used:
(Get-Item "...\iftpsvc.exe").VersionInfo.ProductVersion
---
8. PostgreSQL Version and Upgrade Question
Find version:
psql -U postgres -c "SELECT version();"
Key clarification:
- WS_FTP upgrade does NOT upgrade PostgreSQL
- PostgreSQL 14 is currently supported
- End-of-life: November 2026
Recommendation:
- Do not upgrade PostgreSQL immediately
- Wait for Progress Software guidance
---
Final State:
✅ Upgrade successful
✅ Thin Client working (HTTPS)
✅ Services running
✅ Certificate issues resolved
✅ System stable and production ready
---
