About database bit-ness and TDE

Hi,

Happy New Year.

Just to be sure I'm still sane :), the bit-ness of the database add-on components has to match the bit-ness of the database, right?

i.e. for a 64 bit database, you need the TDE or the Replication components to be also 64 bit.

You cannot have a 32 bit TDE component with a 64 bit database. Aside the fact that it doesn't make sense to have them different, is it actually workable/supported this way?

If you're enabling TDE or Replication while the database is online it should fail, coz shared memory doesn't like cross bit-ness. But overall, is it a supported config to have them different?

Thanks

JM

The question only makes sense for 11.7 because, as Mike said, there are no 32-bit DB server products in 12.x.

In 11.7, the bitness of the add-on products must match the bitness of the server. These features are enabled by information in the .cfg file. A 64-bit server wouldn't know that you've got licenses for the 32-bit add-on products so the features wouldn't be enabled on the server.

I have not used 32-bit server-side products in some years. I have never tried to mix architectures between the RDBMS and its add-ons, or thought of doing so. I would not expect it to be supported or even work if you try to mix them.

Also, you don't need to. If you licensed a product on the wrong architecture or platform and you are on a current maintenance contract, you can trade in your 32-bit licenses for 64-bit at no cost.

One other thought: if you are using Enterprise RDBMS and TDE and OE Replication (11.6+), there may be value in trading in those licenses for the Advanced Enterprise Edition license, which gives you access to all six RDBMS add-on products.

Aren't all DB server products in OpenEdge 12 64 bit only?
