Memory consumption self-service client on HP-UX (11.6.3)

HP-UX OE 11.6.3

I have a question about 2 of our databases that are identical in schema, but one having much more data and users than the other.

The large database has -B 1750000 and the small database -B 12800 (proserve parameter)

In trying to free up some memory (RAM) on our live server we noticed that self-service clients take up about 14mb of memory for a single connection ( simple _progres [db] command) to the large database and only 207kb to the smaller database.

Is the difference between the size/user count causing the difference in memory consumption?

Are there other parameters that influence the memory consumption for a self-service client?

Having a lot of users consuming 14mb of memory quickly adds up.

Regards,

Steven

We lowered -B db-startup parameter for the large database and this resulted in an almost proportionate decrease of memory consumption for the self-service client.

This does not directly address your question, but I wanted to point out that Progress is eliminating support for the HPUX operating system in their future versions of OE (12 and beyond).

There are very few customers who run OE on HPUX and furthermore the HPUX platform now has an upcoming expiration date (per the HPE roadmap).

As to your memory question, you may want to compare the behavior of your custom databases to the "sports" sample database, so that others will have a common point of reference. It might also be very helpful if you recreated this test on Windows or Linux - that would probably get you more help from the community since memory consumption is likely to be different from one OS to another. Based on my experience, even if you were preparing to send this case to Progress support then you would be better off recreating on Windows or Linux since they won't have an HPUX machine immediately available, and it may take them a few days to gain access to one.
