Cause

Sitefintiy backend search by default stores a separate search entry for the Master and Live version of an item.

Resolution

Reconfigure the backend search index so it stores only one search enry for an item.
To do so:
1. Add an update to SearchConfig.config and include the parameter disableIndexingLifecycleVersions="true"

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<searchConfig xmlns:config="urn:telerik:sitefinity:configuration" xmlns:type="urn:telerik:sitefinity:configuration:type" config:version="13.2.7500.0" disableIndexingLifecycleVersions="true" />

2. SearchConfig.config is stored in the database in table [sf_xml_config_items] table. To add the update retrieve the current XML for SearchConfig.config with the SQL query

select * from sf_xml_config_items
where path  = 'SearchConfig.config'

3. modify the XML and include disableIndexingLifecycleVersions="true" as shown above.
4. Update the database entry for SearchConfig.config with:

update sf_xml_config_items
set dta = '<paste the updated XML here>'
where path  = 'SearchConfig.config'

5. Restart the site in order to apply the update done to the database.
6. Reindex the backend search index from Administration -> Search & Indexes
