We started seeing a banner that says "Your Progress® Chef® Automate™ trial license is set to expire on Sat, 29 Mar 2025! Contact the Account Team for help or update with the new license key." after upgrading to 4.12.144.

1. This issue is applicable to enterprise customers having a commercial license only.
2. This issue does not in any way affect the functionality of Chef Automate, the only impact is the banner saying 'trial license' in the Chef Automate UI.
3. You do not need to restart the Chef Automate server in order to get rid of the misleading banner in the UI, so there will be no outage while applying the fix.

Starting from Chef Automate v4.12.144, the Chef Automate UI notifies you if your Chef License is about to expire or has already expired. This banner starts appearing when you are 90 days away from your license expiration date. https://docs.chef.io/release_notes_automate/#4.12.144-automate-licensing

However, due to an issue with our licensing software, the Chef Automate installs with enterprise/commercial license are also displaying the banner as trial license is going to expire like below.

You can run the following command and see the license details with license type from the CLI. Please run this from the Chef Automate server for standalone installations and from the bastion host for Automate HA installations.

 The license type incorrectly shows as 'internal' for commercial installations. This does not in any way affect the functionality of Chef Automate, the only impact is the banner saying 'trial license' in the Chef Automate UI.

To fix this, follow the below steps.

• Download the updated license from the download portal. - https://community.progress.com/s/article/How-Do-I-Find-My-License-Key-Needed-For-Chef-Product-Downloads

• Apply to the Automate setup. - https://docs.chef.io/automate/chef_automate_license/

• No restart on Automate services required.

After this, run the below command to verify that the license type is now corrected to 'commercial'.

The word 'trial' will now disappear from the banner in Chef Automate UI and it will look like following:

1. This issue is applicable to enterprise customers having a commercial license only.
2. This issue does not in any way affect the functionality of Chef Automate, the only impact is the banner saying 'trial license' in the Chef Automate UI.
3. You do not need to restart the Chef Automate server in order to get rid of the misleading banner in the UI, so there will be no outage while applying the fix.
