Performance degrades when passing dynamic temp-table by-reference to method that accepts static temp-table parameter, if the class with the method defines the temp-table without REFERENCE-ONLY option and the method has a static FOR EACH .. BREAK BY loop.

Question/Problem Description

Calling same class method that accepts static temp-table parameter repeatedly shows execution gradually slowing down
Client also leaks memory when issue is seen.

Issue is triggered when code executed by client meets these criteria:

Class defines static temp-table without the REFERENCE-ONLY option
When method is called, dynamic temp-table is passed in with BY-REFERENCE option.
Method called has a FOR EACH .. BREAK BY on the temp-table

Clarifying Information

In OpenEdge 11.5 and later the performance loss / slowdown is no longer observed, however the memory leak remains present.

Enhancement Number

Cause

The performance degradation is due to a memory leak Internal where index references for non-instantiated temp-tables were not managed correctly, inserting the same index reference more than once when passing a temp-table by reference.

Resolution

Upgrade to OpenEdge 11.6.2, 11.7.0 or later. Where the method to keep track of all the index references for the temp-table not yet instantiated was revised to ensure the same index reference is tracked once.

Workaround

1. Run clients with -nottdelay startup parameter. For further information refer to Article:

2. Define the temp-table as REFERENCE-ONLY.
(Note, this does not apply if the class actually needs to maintain it's own instance of the table)
