Can WhatsUp Gold monitor a device?

Can WhatsUp Gold monitor an application?

• How are we able to poll AWS EC2 servers, snmp, syslog, server utilization, services like apache, etc. We have used the built in active and passive monitors but do not seem to have any data.

Can I monitor 'X' with WUG

I need assistance with Monitoring 'X'

WUG is a monitoring application that supports a variety of protocols to resolve monitor queries, then evaluate the results to determine if alerts should be generated.

The minimum requirement for a device to be monitored in WUG is that it responds to ICMP (Ping) requests originating from the WUG application server.

Additional monitoring is possible depending on what protocols the device to be monitored supports, and what type of monitor query needs to be resolved to generate alerts.

WhatsUp Gold supports the following credential types:
https://docs.ipswitch.com/NM/WhatsUpGold2020/03_Help/1033/76041.htm

• SNMPv1
• SNMPv2
• SNMPv3
• Windows
• ADO
• Telnet
• SSH
• VMware
• JMX
• SMI-S
• AWS
• Azure
• Meraki

When a device is discovered in WUG using a valid credential, the application tries to automatically fit the device with Roles and Subroles, then tries to automatically apply monitors based on how those Roles and Subroles are configured. For additional information, see Troubleshooting Roles, Subroles, and Monitors after discovery.

The following two video links also provide some additional detail about the relationship between Discovery and Roles/Subroles:

If a Role, Subrole, or Monitor does not exist out-of-the-box that fits the alerting requirements, there are several options available.

1) Referencing the available documentation , the end user can develop custom content. Technical Support cannot provide direct assistance developing custom content, but if a component of the application is not working correctly Technical Support will be able to troubleshoot the problem.
2) Check the Progress Community site to see if another user has submitted content that fits the requirements, or could be made to do so with minimal tweaking. Questions about any user-submitted content on the Community site should be directed to the author of that content.
3) If the needed custom content is not a critical requirement for alerting, it can be submitted as a feature request to the WhatsUpGold Ideas portal and considered for implementation in future releases.
4) If direct assistance is needed creating or editing custom content, the Professional Services team can assist. See Contacting Progress Professional Services (PSO) Team or reach out to the Account Manager to set up an engagement.

Although this KB article is primarily scoped to custom monitoring solutions, the same options listed above apply towards any request for custom content inside the WUG application.
