Error 14081 Compiling Code in 64-Bit Character Client on Windows

Compiling code on the 64-Bit Character Client (_progres.exe) on Windows will fail if a pure ABL class is referenced in a DEFINE VARIABLE statement using just the class name (i.e. not a fully qualified class name)

Question/Problem Description

Given a simple class defined as shown below:

CLASS Test.SomeClass:
END CLASS.

and a test program defined as shown below:

USING Progress.Lang.*.
USING Test.*.

DEFINE VARIABLE MyClass AS SomeClass.

Running the above code will generate error 14081 (Error Loading the .NET Runtime) when the compiler attempts to compile the DEFINE VARIABLE statement.

Cause

The <process>.exe.config file has not been updated to reflect the file structure used by 64-bit OpenEdge 11 installations. It contains incorrect path information.

In this case the defect is hit as a side effect of using the the unqualified type names and / using statements.
Because of that, the compiler needs to load the NET runtime, to make sure .NET types are covered when resolving the type names.

Resolution

Upgrade to OpenEdge 11.1 or later.

Workaround

Fully qualify the class name in the variable definition as shown below:

DEFINE VARIABLE MyClass AS Test.SomeClass.
