Sitefinity Beta 6.1 available for download

  • Hi Markus,
Comments on your beta related feedback is below:
    -    Problem with link not opening in new window was fixed. Thanks for reporting it!
    -    Opening an image in a light box will be considered for the next release.
    -    We could not reproduce the problem with double entries in navigation templates. Do you add the second template yourself? Any details will be appreciated.
    -    Enabling panelbar will be very out of the box using the Kendo Controls. Samples will be provided.
    -    Creating a nested library with dot problem will be fixed.
    -    We are planning major rework of dashboards for the next release and will remove most of the existing content.

Thanks for finding the time to test and provide feedback.
    -    Kalina

  • Hi Chris,
This is an existing limitation - sub libraries inherit the settings (permissions, thumbnails) of the Root library. The idea is that sub libraries are a way to organize similar content in hierarchies.
If a library should have different settings (thumbnails included), it should be moved to a different parent.

    Hi Rick,
This is known issue in Sitefinity. Since “Images” is used in the URL of images, creating a page with this name in the backend is a problem. We will think of a way to issue a proper warning and explanation when this happens.
Please, proceed by using a page with different name.

    Thanks for your input,
    -Kalina
  • Dear Kali
    -    Opening an image in a light box will be considered for the next release.

    This acutally translates to ...

... sorry did not make it to the road map  6.2
... sorry we try to implement it in the near future
... unfortunately there is no time frame set for this.

I feel like a young boy asking his parent for a cat the past two year and they tell him they consider it next year.

I am trying to move more into the designers market where I provide the best CMS there is: Sitefinity, while they do the design.

Such a simple missing feature is just bad for show and tell. You can show off with all the nice stuff but when they ask you how to open a window large you get transmitted back 10 years. Now in beta it does not even open a new window the user needs to use the back button of his browser.

Wow. but we got responsive design which is great.

Sorry for venting off. But when you ask for something over and over again and you get the same answers every time you kind of loose faith - well this unless this is a request that does not make sense to most end users :-)

Want to know how many times I read the dashboard will be change in the next release?

Are you sure the product will be ready by next week? Just thinking about the bugs we found here makes me worry. I wished you had 100 beta tester more and would starting beta testing about 4 weeks earlier to get more bugs found and fixed.

  • @Markus

I think you're confused as to what this is...it's a beta for 6.1, we're testing new features for problems, it's not a *** fest on what polish updates are still missing.  Everyone already knows the stuff is missing.  If it takes 5 minutes to fix, that's besides the point of this exercise.  We're trying to make sure the *NEW* stuff doesn't go in busted...as annoying as that is...it's what it is.

When you think about it, thumb-nailing is a huge PITS polish item, and a big engineering task to do right, that took a lot of time.  So 1 thumbnail update might have equaled 5 other pits updates.  I'm fine with this one coming first, it's huge for anyone who doesn't want unconfigurable 160px thumbs.  Just because this is a new beta does not mean it's an open bag for them to take 4 weeks to fix all the unrelated polish items.  It's just not how it works...if you don't like it, then don't take part, but you don't have to berate them for not spending time re-doing the dashboard or implementing something else.

Re: Lightbox:  I don't even understand why this is so important...neat, maybe, but it's a fluff enhancement right now.  The pits issue has FOUR votes, one being yours, this isn't exactly high priority right now.

Does this look familiar? demos.telerik.com/.../defaultcs.aspx ...it should...it's the cropping tool.  They didn't spend any time building it, just dropped it in.  So it's not that a lightbox is so significantly harder to do...it's just small potatoes.  If you want a control to do that for your users, then make one in thunder, it'll do image pickers for you...but I don't want dev time wasted on something like that when things like the download list still don't have multiple templates available in the UI.

So yes...we got responsive design, and while it's still in it's infancy, it IS great, and sure as hell is gonna sell a lot more licenses than an image loading in a lightbox...

The checkbox not being persisted?...yeah that should be fixed though because you can't even change it in Advanced settings....I have voted on the pits item.

Just because you ask for something over and over again does mean it's ever going to appear...there needs to be consensus that everyone wants it when they do their planning, and 4 votes doesn't really scream "urgent: enhance me now".

    Re: Dash:
Who REALLY cares, you know as well as I do you can jQuery those links out in 2 minutes...a dash is so unimportant in the grand scheme of things when we're looking at missing ModuleBuilder features or API enhancements.

As a developer you should be pushing for things to make your life easier so you can do more sites faster, not fluff items like a content aggregator (dash).  Right now you're just clogging the thread with old things and being REALLY ungrateful for even being part of this preview to find problems.
  • Hi Markus,
All critical bugs reported by beta testers were fixed already. Our team is testing extensively as we speak, and is in the final stages of verification. That said, the release will be next week, as planned.
I agree with Steve that we should stick to discussing the 6.1. Beta release in this forum to keep the discussion focused and productive.

  • Hello,

Thank you for the big update with Ecommerce Dependent Attributes per variation. I am unfortunately not ready to test these features just yet, but I did want you all to know a lot of people have been looking for this particular portion of the update. We did a lot of talking about this on this forum here: www.sitefinity.com/.../ecommerce-product-creation---multiple-attributes-in-one-variation

Thanks again for everyone's hard work!
    James
  • @Kali

    Please accept my apologies.

    @Steve

When you are right, you are right :-)

    Markus
  • Clicking the resized image opens the image in its original size

Only when you use your custom settings will the image be opend in its (as might be understood by end users) original size.

Thumbs just open in a new window.

    Would it be possible

    a) when this option is checked that thumbs would automtically open the original size image
    b) if a) is not possible remove this option for all but the manually resized versions

I don't think it makes sense to open a thumb image in thumb size in the same browser window.

    Markus
  • Changing thumb image will change original image and all it's thumbs.

    www.marktold.com/screencast/sf_change_thumb.swf

Could this lead to troubles - Should there be a warning?

    Markus
  • Hi Markus,
    1) on the problem with open in new window - this will be fixed, thumbs will open the original size. Thanks for letting us know!
    2) On editing the thumbnail - this will not be allowed. Users should always work with the original image if they want to make changes. Nice catch!
Thanks for this very useful feedback on the Beta!

  • Dear Kalina

Will we see another beta or was that it?

Any date set for the release. I have a new project in line and if 6.1 comes out this week I will wait.

    Markus
  • Dear Kalina

How about the Panelbar example where you have a top level menu with only 1 level

    - Home
    - Products
    - About us

and the Subnavigation with Panelbar based upon the selection of the top level menu

if Products is selected Panelbar show show

    - Product 1
       Prodcut  1 description
       Produckt 1 price
    - Product 2
       Product 2 description
       Prodcuct 2 price

Dont see an Panelbar Template - thought there was going to be one.

    Markus
  • Hi Markus,

Although there is no default navigation widget template for PanelBar, there is enough flexibility to create a custom one. We have a sample for this exact scenario here.

    Kind Regards,
    Tihomir
  • Dear Tihomir

Thanks. The question is more how do I get the panelbar to be based on the top level menu

Before I used a sitemap which I would bind to the RadPanelbar.

    Markus

PS: This is the template for treeview. wouldn't it be easy to incluce a panelbar template out of the box so we would not have to find the link you gave me every time and make the changes in every single project. Please remember there are some of us who deploy and maintain more then one site a year.

So every thing out of the box saves us not only time once but every time.
