Question/Problem Description
When attempting to open pl files stored in shared locations remote clients and AppServer agents fail with error 290
AppServer agents crash with java.lang.NullPointerException, which leads to quickly running out of available agents to handle incoming requests
The subsequent requests to the AppServer fail due to error 8089

Failures occur sporadically when accessing files stored on shared drives in remote locations
Error Message(290) SYSTEM ERROR: I/O error 22 in readit, ret -1, file 11, addr 0
(290) SYSTEM ERROR: I/O error 9 in readit, ret -1, file 8(\\remote_share\library.pl), addr <offset>.

ERROR: No servers available. (8089)

The problem is related to a Microsoft issue with file caching
Resolution
1. On the server where the share of the file is located, open the Properties of the share:
2. Go to "Sharing" -> "Advanced sharing" -> "Caching"
3. Check the "No files or programs from the shared folder are available offline" option
