Question/Problem Description

The WRITE-JSON methods doesn't serialise empty temp tables in a proDataset

When writing a proDataset out as JSON, if a child table of the proDataset is empty, this is excluded from the output JSON file. For example in the following code the child temp table ttSub is empty:

DEFINE TEMP-TABLE ttMain NO-UNDO SERIALIZE-NAME 'main':U
    FIELD Id   AS CHARACTER
    FIELD Name AS CHARACTER.

DEFINE TEMP-TABLE ttSub NO-UNDO SERIALIZE-NAME 'sub':U
    FIELD Id     AS CHARACTER
    FIELD IdMain AS CHARACTER
    FIELD Name   AS CHARACTER.

DEFINE DATASET dsMain FOR ttMain, ttSub
    DATA-RELATION drMain FOR ttMain, ttSub
    RELATION-FIELDS (ttMain.Id, ttSub.IdMain) NESTED.
    
CREATE ttMain.
ASSIGN 
    ttMAin.Id   = "123"
    ttMain.name = "name".
  
DATASET dsMain:WRITE-JSON ("file", "ttMain.json", TRUE).

In the output ttSub is omitted from the JSON file:

Why isn't the empty temp table included in the output, for example:

{"dsMain": {
  "main": [
    {
      "Id": "123",
      "Name": "name",
      "sub": []
    }
  ]
}}

It was determined that the Progress Product is functioning as designed.

Customer feedback is valuable and Idea submissions are monitored by our Product Management team. Enhancement requests are reviewed during the planning phase of each new product release and a list of the enhancements chosen for implementation can be found in the Release Notes documents that accompany each release. Once an Idea is submitted the Progress Software Community will have the opportunity to comment on and vote for the Idea.

Resolution

None at this time.

Workaround

As a work around it may be possible to use the jsonObject READ method to write the proDataset into a jsonObject. Traverse the prodataset relations and add the empty JsonArrays in the appropriate places using the JsonObject Add method.
