Resolution

1. Figure out which scripts are necessary for the desired content selector by running the following C# code in a WebForm:
Replace the value of the variable 'componentName' with

var componentName = "sf-document-field";
var assembly = Assembly.Load("Telerik.Sitefinity.Frontend");
var type = assembly.GetType("Telerik.Sitefinity.Frontend.Mvc.Models.ComponentsDependencyResolver");
var method = type.GetMethod("GetScripts", BindingFlags.Static | BindingFlags.Public);

var result = method.Invoke(null, new[] { new List<string> { componentName }, null }) as List<string>;
var scripts = string.Join(Environment.NewLine, result);

2. Follow the documentation article for using content selectors outside widget designer view: Sitefinity Documentation, Use content selectors outside of widget designer views https://www.progress.com/documentation/sitefinity-cms/102/feather-use-content-selectors-outside-of-widget-designer-views

3. In the View load the scripts generated from the code in step 1 instead of the sample scripts from the documentation article.
The scripts loaded in the view in the documentation article are specific to only the selector for dynamic content items, other selectors require different script references.
