Pro2 - How to recover threads that show the message "Thread <n> already running in another process"?

Records are not being replicated and CDC data are not being processed and the message in the log is "Thread <n> already Running in another process". How to recover?

Question/Problem Description

Pro2 threads will not start. Each is showing a message like "CDC Admin Thread# 3 is already Running in another session. Shutting down." Other threads are running and processing records.

When in the Admin tool, the threads are showing as running, but the queue is not moving at all.

This message comes from code which checks a control table to verify if there is a locked control record in existence for the thread in question, which indicates that the thread has started. When a thread shuts down normally, this record is supposed to be released, but apparently these threads went down abnormally and left a remaining lock on the thread control record(s).

When this problem occurs, follow the below steps to recover on your own:

From the thread control in Pro2 Admin, disable the thread(s) that are stuck
From Task Scheduler perform the following actions for the affected thread(s):
- Right-click and stop the task(s)
- Right-click and Disable the task(s)
Go to Task Manager and look for the existence of _progres.exe process(es) that match the affected thread id (to ensure the processes have successfully shut down)
- If you still see the process(es) running in task manager, Right-click and End Task on them
Back in Pro2 Admin, enable the thread(s)
Back in Task Scheduler, perform the following actions for the affected thread(s)
- Right-click and Enable the task(s)
- Right-click and Run the task(s)
