Question/Problem Description

When attempting to change to a specific site selecting it from the dropdownlist in Multisite Management Sitefinity doesn't change to the selected site but remains in the current one.

Clarifying Information

The Application_BeginRequest in Global.asax.cs contains the following code:

var pages = pageManager.GetPageNodes().Where(p => p.RootNodeId == SiteInitializer.CurrentFrontendRootNodeId);

Cause

Unfortunately the Application_BeginRequest lifecyle hook is a very early point to initiate a request to get any manager. The reason behind is that it tries to determine the current default provider and if the user has rights to it. Because it has to check which provider is available for the current site, it determines the current site and if the user has rights to it. Since there is no user it cannot find a proper site and fullbacks to the default one and caches it for the whole request. This means that the whole request will be executed without a proper site context.

Resolution

Attach instead to the PostAuthenticateRequest to execute your logic. For instance:

protected void Application_PostAuthenticateRequest(object sender, EventArgs e)
{
// logic here
}
