This articles explains why some changes to the process templates requires a full a full reinstall of the deployed OEBPM application, terminating all running process instances.

Question/Problem Description

Unable to redeploy the application without reinstalling.

Which changes to the BPM process template require a full reinstall of the BPM application?

Error message stating that application must be reinstalled (updating by simply copying the process template files to the server is not possible).

Steps to Reproduce

Clarifying Information

Reinstalling a previously deployed applications requires the termination of all running instances.

The initial process template is the following:

The process template is then changed as follows:

Error Message

For replacement PT <ProcessTemplate_Version> with safe mode enabled, new AND Type worksteps cannot be added. Remove the following new AND worksteps: AND X

Cause

This is an expected behavior. Adding an AND connector with multiple predecessors always requires a reinstall.

Consider the initial process template. "Activity 1" contains a form with 2 dataslots, indicating whether an "Activity 2" and "Activity 3" task must be created.

The dataslot indicating that "Activity 2" must be executed is set to true.
The dataslot indicating that "Activity 3" must be executed is set to false.

After validating "Activity 1", the AND gateway involves the evaluation of both "Decision 1" and "Decision 2"

Decision 1 > Connection 7 > Activity 2
Decision 2 > Connection 6 > END

At that point "Activity 2" still has to complete. In the meantime the process template is updated (see above) and changes are being pushed to the server.

Imagine the update would not trigger an error and the BPM server would update the process template on the server.

In order to pass the AND2 gateway it is required to:

Complete "Activity 2"

and

Satisfy the "Connection 6" condition

Yet, the outcome of "Decision 2" (in the example connection 6) is already completed. Therefore OEBPM server is unable to evaluate it in the AND2 gateway.

In fact if:

The application is reinstalled with the updated process template,
A new process instance is started, using the same dataslot values for "Activity 1"
"Activity 1" is completed,

The following will be visible in OEBPM portal:

There are 2 active tasks:

Activity 2
AND2 which is an internal task which will be evaluated once Activity 2 is completed.

Resolution

Reinstall the application or change the template to avoid the situation where a reinstall will be required. This may however not always not be possible without altering the process logic.
