Pivotal User

The Pivotal User is a special user created during the initial setup of Chef Infra Server. It is used for bootstrapping and has full administrative privileges over the Chef Infra Server.

• Purpose:

  • Automatically created during the initial installation of Chef Infra Server.

  • Serves as a superuser account, primarily for bootstrapping and recovery scenarios.

  • Used to create the first organization, users, and assign roles.

• Permissions:

  • Unrestricted access to all objects (nodes, cookbooks, environments, roles, data bags, etc.).

  • Can perform any action on the server.

  • Cannot be deleted or restricted.

  • Useful in recovery situations, for example, if all admin accounts are accidentally locked out.

Admin Users

Admin users are regular users in Chef Infra Server who have been granted admin privileges within an organization:

• Purpose:

  • Regular users who are granted admin privileges within an organization.

  • Used for day-to-day management of Chef resources.

• Permissions:

  • Can create, update, and delete objects within their assigned organization.

  • Can invite and manage other users (except the Pivotal user).

  • Have broad privileges, but cannot override or modify the Pivotal account.

Key Difference

• Pivotal user is a system-level superuser (server-wide, unrestricted).

• Admin users are organization-level administrators with privileges scoped to their org.

Best Practice: Use Admin users for all day-to-day operations. Reserve the Pivotal user only for bootstrap or recovery scenarios to minimize risk.
