How do I configure MOVEit Transfer to work with Azure NetApp Files storage? 

Does MOVEit Transfer work with SMB shares in Azure? 

Depending on the configuration, administrators may use Azure username or a domain account name. 

• Azure usernames use localhost as the prefix.  Example: localhost\storageserviceacct  

• For an Azure username the password is also called the "storage account key."  This is a very long string that should by copy/pasted from the Azure portal. 

• For Active Directory users the password is the Active Directory password. 

MOVEit Transfer may be configured to store encrypted files on a remote share using SMB.  Azure Files and Azure NetApp Files both support creation of SMB shares. Please consult your Azure System Administrator as you implement these options. 
 

1. Follow the Azure Files (or NetApp Files) documentation to create a storage account, SMB share and configure authentication
2. Configure MOVEit Transfer to use the Azure SMB share 
   1. For a New Install, use the install guide and input your Azure Files in step 8: MOVEit Transfer Installation - https://docs.progress.com/bundle/moveit-install-2022/page/MOVEit-Transfer-Installation.html
   2. For an existing install moving to Azure Files, use the following article: Can I move my MOVEit Transfer(DMZ) files to a different hard drive?
3. Test connection from the MOVEit Transfer server to the Azure share
   1. Open MOVEit Transfer Config Utility
   2. On the ‘Paths’ tab click the ‘Advanced’ button under the ‘Files’ text box
   3. Enter the UNC path to the Azure SMB share.  This path should be available from the Azure Portal and begins with double-backslash (\\)  Example: \\mystorageaccount.file.core.windows.net\mysharename
   4. Enter the Username and Password for accessing the share. 
      • The username and password are available from the Azure Portal
      • Domain credentials may also be used. Microsoft documentation should be consulted for directions on configuring domain access to Azure Files SMB shares.
   5. Click the Test button to validate the path and credentials
   6. Once the Test is successful click OK on the Advanced window
4. Apply the changes in MOVEit Transfer Config Utility and restart all services
5. Validate file upload/download from MOVEit Transfer
   1. Open the MOVEit Transfer web UI
   2. Log in
   3. Copy a file to the Home folder
   4. Download a file from the Home folder
   5. Delete the file

Potential Errors During Connection Test

• Error: The network path was not found
  • UNC path is incorrect
    • Validate the UNC path from the Azure Portal
  • Port 445 is blocked
    • Many ISPs and corporate networks block SMB traffic on port 445
    • Using an on-premises MOVEit Transfer server with Azure Files SMB is not a recommended configuration.  It is recommended that to deploy the MOVEit Transfer server in Azure in the same region as your Azure Files SMB is deployed.
• Error: The specified network password is not correct
  • Username or password is incorrect
    • Validate you are using the correct username and password
  • User is not allowed to access the Azure Files SMB share
    • Verify that the user is correctly configured to have access to the Azure Files SMB share.
    • This may require review with company Azure experts or security team
• Error: Multiple connections to a server or shared resource by the same user, using more than one user name, are not allowed.  Disconnect all previous connections to the server or shared resource and try again.
  • This error message occurs when the share is already mounted in Windows for the currently logged on user.  This may be from a temporary connection in Windows Explorer or a Mapped Drive.
    • Remove any mounted shares or mapped drives to the Azure Files SMB path
      • Open Command Prompt
      • Run ‘net use’ command to view mounted shares and delete any mounted shares pointing to the Azure Files SMB server
      • Refer to the Microsoft help documentation for ‘net use’ for instructions on deleting a mounted share
    • Remove any credentials for the Azure Files SMB share that may be stored in the Windows Credential Manager
      • Open the Credential Manager from the start menu
      • Click on “Windows Credentials”
      • Remove any stored credentials that are associated with the Azure Files storage.  Example: mystorage.file.core.windows.net
