The Progress DataDirect for JDBC for Oracle driver returned an ORA-00910 error when the query "SELECT CAST('test' AS VARCHAR2(32767)) FROM dual" was executed in environments where Extended Data Types (EDT) were not enabled.

The Progress DataDirect for JDBC for Oracle driver returned an ORA-00910 error when the query "SELECT CAST('test' AS VARCHAR2(32767)) FROM dual" was executed in environments where Extended Data Types (EDT) were not enabled.

The driver was executing one or both of the following internal queries to determine whether the server had its support for extended strings enabled:

select value from v$parameter where name='max_string_size'
select cast('test' as varchar2(32767)) from dual

Although the queries were suitable for making the determination, it resulted in an error from a server for which the extended string support was not enabled. The error was taken by the driver to mean that the server does NOT support extended strings.

However, the error was logged by the server to its log file, if such tracing was enabled. This resulted in many such errors being written to the log.

To avoid impacting the server log, the queries were replaced with the following:

select to_char(length(LPAD('test',4001))) from dual

If the query returns "4001", then the server DOES support extended strings.

If it returns anything else (which we would expect to be "4000"), then the server does NOT support extended strings.

NOTE:  This fix only resolves the error resulting from executing the queries internally by the driver. If an application executes similar queries that fail for the same reason, the error is valid and outside of the scope of this fix.

Fixed in release 6.0.0.001776. Refer to “Connect for JDBC release download and install instructions” for instructions on how to download and install the release.
