How to test the new version of WhatsUp Gold and migrate to a test system.

Want to build a new server using an evaluation and a clean database?

The necessary steps to organize a WUG test environment:

Existing install of WUG but want to decommission that and install fresh instance on new virtual machine...what is the best way to accomplish this?

FOR ANY INSTALLATION OR UPDATE of WhatsUp Gold, it is recommended to review the Release Notes, Getting Started Guide, Database Migration and Management Guides, and the Installing and Configuring Guides. These can be found HERE.  The guides will answer your questions regarding upgrading and migration steps and the System Requirements needed for your new version (found in the release notes for that specific version).

In addition to the guide, there are additional items to consider during the migration:

If any of the following settings were modified on the existing server, the modifications must
be repeated on the new server:

• Any settings manually configured in the registry must also be reconfigured on the
• Copy files that have been added to the Data subfolder of the WhatsUp Gold install directory to the same location on the new server.

These files include:

• Custom images
• Custom sounds
• MIB files
• SSL certificates

Please do the following to set up the new server and migrate from the old server:

1. Perform a Validate and Compact on your current database. (From the WhatsUp Gold Admin Console, select Tools > Database Utilities > Tools..., Under 'Performance' click Validate and Compact)
2. Back up the WUG databases. (see How to backup and restore my WhatsUp databases)
3. Obtain an evaluation from the WhatsUpGold.com site.
4. Install the WhatsUpGold Evaluation version on the new server.
5. During the installation, WUG will ask you what database to use. Please review the Database Migration and Management Guides. A remote SQL server can be used. Follow the guide.  IF you are pointing this new server to existing WUG databases on a remote server, the OLD WUG server must be offline.  You should never have two WUG servers working with the same set of databases on the same SQL server.
6. Perform any testing required at this point using a "blank" database. 
7. Restore the WhatsUp Gold Databases using the local admin client. This will upgrade your databases if needed.  Please refer to the release notes references above to ensure that you can upgrade directly to the newest version from your current version. 
8. Run the Migration Utility from the whatsup directory.  This process makes sure that the data is correct for the new version.
   1. C:\Program Files (x86)\Ipswitch\WhatsUp\MigrationUtility.exe
9. Run any testing required using your full database. 
10. When ready, deactivate the license on the old WUG server. This can be completed in the WhatsUp License Utility on the start/programs/Ipswitch WhatsUpGold/Manage WhatsUpGold License on the old server.
11. Activate the full license on the Evaluation version using the product License Activation Key.

There is a limit of 30 days to use the Evaluation version or it can immediately be activated.  If you need an extension of your evaluation license during testing, please contact your sales representative.
