Question/Problem Description

The collation-sensitive MATCHES operator enabled by -collop 2 incorrectly matches substrings with different numbers of trailing spaces.

For example, "a a" (with one space) MATCHES "* *" (with two spaces) returns TRUE.

Steps to Reproduce

DEFINE VARIABLE vc AS CHARACTER NO-UNDO. MESSAGE "a a" matches "* *" /* (a-space-a) matches (wildcard-space-space-wildcard) */ VIEW-AS ALERT-BOX INFO BUTTONS OK. The output should be "no". Yet the result of the code execution is "yes" in 11.5.1.013. With -collop 0 => NO With -collop 1 => NO With -collop 2 => YES.

Clarifying Information

Database code-page is UTF-8.

Session startup parameters:

-cpinternal utf-8
-cpcoll icu-fr
-collop 2

Cause

This is a known issue.

In the change for PSC00340697 (addressed in hotfix 11.5.1.013), the pattern comparison was allowed to match up to 3 characters either side of the substring, to allow for a case with ICU-de__PHONEBOOK where two characters may sort the same as one single character. This allowed a situation where substrings with a dissimilar number of trailing spaces would sort the same, even if the substrings had characters following them. Please note that collations always trim trailing spaces, so a comparison of " " (one space) with " " (two spaces) would return equality.

For instance, the MATCHES or the equality operation will always return YES in the following cases:

MESSAGE "foo " MATCHES "foo"
    " foo" MATCHES "foo"
    " foo" = "foo"
    "foo " = "foo".

Resolution

Upgrade to 11.6.1 or later.
