How to avoid error (16058) when calling GetJsonText()?

When calling methods in a JsonObject instance like GetJsonText(), GetCharacter(), GetInteger(), etc, if the field doesn't exist in the json the error 16058 is returned. How can that error be avoided?

Question/Problem Description

The Progress.Lang.ObjectModel.JsonObject class has methods that allow a developer to get values from the Json object by name. These methods include, but are not limited to GetCharacter(), GetJsonText(), etc...

For example:
ASSIGN cParentID = oJsonObject:GetJsonText("parentId")
iId = oJsonObject:GetJsonText("id")
cExternalId = oJsonObject:GetCharacter("externalId").

When a given record in the Json doesn't have a parentId field, the program displays the below error message:

Call to Progress.Json.ObjectModel.JsonObject:GetJsonText() failed. Property 'parentid' was not found. (16058)

Is it possible to avoid this error if the field doesn't exist in the JsonObject?

Resolution

To avoid the 16058 error, use the Has() method on the Json object to verify whether the field exists if it is at all possible that the field might not be present in the Json object.

For example:

ASSIGN cParentID = (IF oJsonObject:Has("parentId") THEN oJsonObject:GetJsonText("parentId") ELSE ?)
iId = (IF oJsonObject:Has("id") THEN oJsonObject:GetJsonText("id") ELSE ?)
cExternalId = (IF oJsonObject:Has("externalId") THEN oJsonObject:GetCharacter("externalId") ELSE ?).

A JSON download can be manually checked for whether or not a particular field exists by pointing a browser at the web service that returns the JSON stream. The resultant JSON stream appears in the browser, as text. The browser's "Find" function can be used to check whether or not the field exists in the JSON stream.
