Question/Problem Description

How can a user fix the error 'Multiple connections to a server or shared resource by the same user, using more than one user name, are not allowed'?
One or more automation tasks fail with the following error message:

Steps to Reproduce

1) Log in to Automation in either the Web Admin or the VB Admin. 2) Open/create a UNC Share host and input a designated set of credentionals. 3) Create a second UNC Share host that points to the same OR a different folder on the same server. 4) Add a different set of credentials to the login info. 5) See the error.

This error can present directly for a Host setup or in a particular task setup that uses Override credentials.

Disconnect all previous connections to the server or shared resource and try again.

Cause

This error message means that the MOVEit Automation server already has a connection to that UNC path, whether it's defined in MOVEit Automation or not. Windows only allows you to connect to a particular UNC path with one username, regardless of the number of connections to that UNC. If the same username is used for all connections to a UNC from MOVEit Automation, then the error should not occur.

In some cases, administrators report this error when logged on through the Web Admin BUT NOT when logged in through the VB Admin. In these cases, the reason may be that the UNC Host is using the "Use These Credentials instead of the Use Automation Run As Credentials" setting described here: Windows UNC Share Field Descriptions - https://docs.progress.com/bundle/moveit-automation-web-admin-help-2025/page/Windows-UNC-Share-Field-Descriptions.html

Resolution

If this is a recently added or changed a UNC host in MOVEit Automation and there are no other connections from the MOVEit Automation server to that share, then it is also possible that an old connection to that share still exists. A restart of the MOVEit Automation service would clear up the problem if that is the case (here are recommendations on starting and stopping the service: https://docs.progress.com/bundle/moveit-automation-web-admin-help-2025/page/Starting-and-Stopping.html

**If the above does not resolve the issue, instances have been seen that restarting the Workstation service will resolve the issue. Checking for existing server sessions with Automation can be helpful in these circumstances. There have also been instances where using the server address without specifying the root Shared folder can present this issue - likely because another connection exists with the server itself. To test this out, select the specific Shared folder in the UNC host for the server itself.

Please contact MOVEit Support if there continue to be issues accessing a UNC path from MOVEit Automation after attempting both resolutions.

Workaround

The hostname will support one username establishing a connection via this method. The IP address will support one username as well. If any more than two connections are needed, the remaining will need to be setup using aliases. There can be one connection per alias.

In one case, all existing hosts were using the local service account. New hosts were created that used other user names. As soon as the new hosts were set up to use the local service name, the error stopped occurring.
