• I configured an SMS alert but when going to test area it's not showing in my list of actions to select.
• How can I test the Post to Teams Action?
• How can I test the Log to File Action?
• How can I test the Post to Slack Action?
• How can I test the PowerShell Script Action?
• How can I test Actions I have configured in the Actions Library?

Method 1: WhatsUp Gold Actions and Polices Library (versions 24.0 and newer)

You can now validate actions without the need to launch the WhatsUp Gold Admin Console Application. In the web user interface, access the Actions and Policies library by selecting SETTINGS > Action & Alerts > Actions and Policies from the main menu at the top of the WhatsUp Gold user interface. To test an action, first ensure the Actions tab is selected, then click the Test link to launch the Action Test dialog. Select an action from the drop-down menu provided, then click Test. Review the results of the test. If you encounter any errors, modify the action's configuration settings as needed and retest.

* NOTE: The Test results are not logged to the Action Log.

Please note, at this time, the Test function in the Action Library in the WebUI can only be used with the following actions:

• Email
• Log to File
• Post to MS Teams
• Post to Slack
• PowerShell Script

Please submit an idea to request any additional action types for consideration to be added to the Test function in future releases. For Action Types not listed above, please see Method 2 below.

Method 2: WhatsUp Gold Admin Console (all versions prior to 24.0)

In versions prior to 24.0, the function to Test Actions is not in the Web Console but still resides in the Admin Console and still includes Action Types not yet added to the WebUI version of the Test tool. Note that you still must configure Actions in the Web Console first. More information on that can be found in Configure and assign Action Policy

1. Log into the WhatsUp Gold server and launch the WhatsUp Gold Admin Console.
2. Click Configure | Action Library

3. Highlight the Email Action in question and click Test. *If you do not see an Email Action Listed that means you have not yet configured one. Please go back to the Web Console and configure at least one Email Action in the Action Library.

4. The test dialog window may populate with the following (you will need to expand the Details button to see this information):

Loading action parameters for 'Test Email Action'.
Executing action 'Test Email Action'.
Starting Test E-mail Action 'Test Email Action'
Sending email
SMTP message sent successfully.

If these are the results of the test, this means that WhatsUp has delivered the email to your internal email relay and now we are relying on your SMTP server to deliver the email. If WUG indicates a success, you will need to review the logs on your SMTP Relay.

NOTE: The Test results are not logged to the Action Log in the Web Console.

Method 3: Windows PowerShell (*for Email only – other Action types will need to use one of the Methods above)

The following PowerShell script will help in determining if Emails can be sent out from the WUG server, and if not, it will give general information as to why it is failing.  Note that this is testing from the Server OS itself and not from the WhatsUp Gold application.

To run this script below please follow these steps.

1. Open a PowerShell Console on the WhatsUp Gold Server
2. After opening the prompt, please take the following Script and replace the FROM, TO and SMTPSERVER information that is underlined below with the settings used within WhatsUp Gold

• Send-MailMessage –From wug@ipswitch.com –To test@ipswitch.com –Subject “Test Email” –Body “Test E-mail (body)” -SmtpServer relay.ipswitch.com

3. After these changes have been made please copy it and run it in the PowerShell Console and press enter
4. One of two things will happen after running

• If no results are given, then the script succeeded in connecting and sending email to the SMTP server
• If results are given, it will explain why it either could not connect to the SMTP server, or if there was an issue sending the email
  • Example:
    • PS C:\Users\Administrator> Send-MailMessage –From wug@ipswitch.com –To test@ipswitch.com –Subject “Test Email” –Body “Test E-mail (body)” -SmtpServer relay.ipswitch
Send-MailMessage : The remote name could not be resolved: 'relay.ipswitch'
      At line:1 char:1
      + Send-MailMessage –From wug@ipswitch.com –To test@ipswitch.com –Subject “Test Ema ...
      + ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
          + CategoryInfo          : InvalidOperation: (System.Net.Mail.SmtpClient:SmtpClient) [Send-MailMessage], SmtpException
          + FullyQualifiedErrorId : SmtpException,Microsoft.PowerShell.Commands.SendMailMessage

• If you are receiving an error where you are needing Authentication, please use the script below as it adds -Credential $msolcred and will prompt for a login. This is normally used for Office 365:
  • PS C:\Users\Administrator> Send-MailMessage –From wug@ipswitch.com –To test@ipswitch.com –Subject “Test Email” –Body “Test E-mail (body)” -SmtpServer smtp.office365.com -Credential $msolcred
• If your SMTP server requires Authentication and Encryption, please use the script below as it adds -Credential $msolcred with -Port -UseSSL which will prompt for a login and use SSL. This is normally used by Office 365 with a secure connection, and this is the default setup that is recommended by Microsoft:
  • PS C:\Users\Administrator> Send-MailMessage –From wug@ipswitch.com –To test@ipswitch.com –Subject “Test Email” –Body “Test E-mail (body)” -SmtpServer smtp.office365.com -Credential $msolcred -Port 587 -UseSsl

If the email is successful be sure to check email filters.  For instance, in some cases 2 emails in the same second will be successful but if the email monitoring tool detects 3 or more in 1 sec, it will reject the emails.  In this case, further configuration on the email filtering tool is required.

*Please keep in mind that this PowerShell Script is only used for testing/troubleshooting and should not be used for alerting within WhatsUp Gold.
