Question/Problem Description

Encountering a fatal error:canceling authentication due to timeout, along with intermittent connection issues when using Progress DataDirect PostgreSQL JDBC driver

Steps to Reproduce

Step-1 : Install dependencies # sudo yum update -y # sudo yum groupinstall -y "Development Tools" # sudo yum install -y readline-devel zlib-devel wget Step-2 : Download PostgreSQL source code https://www.postgresql.org/ftp/source/v15.3/ Step-3 : Extract the tar files # tar -xf postgresql-15.3.tar.gz # cd postgresql-15.3 Step-4 : Configure, build and install PostgreSQL # ./configure # make # sudo make install Step-5 : Create postgreSQL user and directories # sudo useradd postgres # sudo mkdir /usr/local/pgsql/data # sudo chown postgres /usr/local/pgsql/data Step-6 : Initialize the database cluster # sudo su - postgres $ /usr/local/pgsql/bin/initdb -D /usr/local/pgsql/data $ exit Step-7 : Configure scram-sha-256 authentication 1. Edit the 'pg_hba.conf" file to use scram-sha-256 authentication # sudo vi /usr/local/pgsql/data/pg_hba.conf 2. Add the following lines or modify existing lines #TYPE DATABASE USER ADDRESS METHOD host all all 127.0.0.1/32 scram-sha-256 host all all ::1/128 scram-sha-256 host all all 0.0.0.0/0 scram-sha-256 Step-8 : Start PostgreSQL server # sudo su - postgres $ /usr/local/pgsql/bin/pg_ctl -D /usr/local/pgsql/data -l logfile start $ exit Step-9 : Set PostgreSQL environment variables # echo 'export PATH=/usr/local/pgsql/bin:$PATH >> ~/.bash_profile # source ~/.bash_profile Step-10 : Add postgreSQL binaries to PATH # sudo su - postgres $ vi ~/.bash_profile --> export PATH=/usr/local/pgsql/bin:$PATH - save file and exit the editor. $ source ~/.bash_profile - reload the '.bash_profile' to apply changes $ echo $PATH - verify the path $ exit Step-11 : Create a postgresql user with password # sudo su - postgres $psql postgres=# CREATE USER username WITH PASSWORD 'password'; postgres=# ALTER USER username SET password_encryption = 'scram-sha-256'; postgres=# ALTER USER username CREATEDB; postgres=# CREATE DATABASE databasename postgres=# \q $ exit Step-12 : Restart the PostgreSQL Server # sudo su - postgres $ /usr/local/pgsql/bin/pg_ctl -D /usr/local/pgsql/data restart $ exit Step13 : Verification # psql -U username -h 127.0.0.1 -d postgres Step 14 : Multiple Connects with the Progress DataDirect PostgreSQL JDBC driver.

Cause

It appears that the problem is due to the Sun’s Security classes depend on the OS’s /dev/random device file. This device generates a random number based on the entropy ( and system events ) which can be a blocking call and slow.

On the other hand , /dev/urandom is a non-blocking device file ,but for the first time, it needs a seed from /dev/random. Later on, based on the seed it keeps generating Pseudo Random number.

Resolution

Execute the application with the JVM argument :

java -Djava.security.egd=file:/dev/./urandom <application name>
