Question/Problem Description

A syntax check on the following line (see full example below) will return error 12905:

RETURN HEX-DECODE(BitwiseXor(HEX-ENCODE(Binary1), HEX-ENCODE(Binary2))).

This will however compile correctly when written out as follows:

CLASS HexHelper:

    METHOD PUBLIC RAW BitwiseXor2(Binary1 AS RAW, Binary2 AS RAW):

      // This statement will return syntax error 12905:
      /*RETURN HEX-DECODE(BitwiseXor(HEX-ENCODE(Binary1), HEX-ENCODE(Binary2))).*/

       DEFINE VARIABLE HexString1 AS CHARACTER NO-UNDO.
       DEFINE VARIABLE HexString2 AS CHARACTER NO-UNDO.
       DEFINE VARIABLE HexResult AS CHARACTER NO-UNDO.
       DEFINE VARIABLE RawReturn AS RAW NO-UNDO.

       ASSIGN
           HexString1 = HEX-ENCODE(Binary1)
           HexString2 = HEX-ENCODE(Binary2)
           HexResult = BitwiseXor(HexString1, HexString2)
           RawReturn = HEX-DECODE(HexResult).

       RETURN RawReturn.

    END METHOD.

   METHOD PUBLIC CHARACTER BitwiseXor(HexString1 AS CHARACTER, HexString2 AS CHARACTER):
       UNDO, THROW NEW Progress.Lang.AppError("Not yet implemented...").

Cause

The documented return types for the HEX-ENCODE() and HEX-DECODE() functions are not correct.

HEX-ENCODE returns a LONGCHAR and HEX-DECODE a MEMPTR, and not a CHARACTER and RAW type respectively as mentioned in the documentation:

Resolution
