The site is encountering issues related to the UrlName functionality in some of the dynamic modules. Currently, the site is on Sitefinity version 15.2.8400.0, and noticed that the regex applied to the UrlName field differs depending on when the module was created. Specifically:

In this version, new dynamic modules are created with a specific regular expression (regex) enforced by the system. However, modules that were created in earlier Sitefinity versions still use the regex from those older versions. This discrepancy is causing inconsistencies and issues in our environment, as the behavior of the UrlName field varies across modules created in different versions.

Is it possible to edit or customize the regular expression applied to the UrlName field for dynamic modules?

Can this be done through the Sitefinity backend or using the import/export functionality?

Or is the only option to modify this directly in the database?

Is this design intentional? In other words, is Sitefinity's architecture specifically set up to prevent editing of this regex? Looking to resolve these inconsistencies and establish a consistent approach for managing UrlName across the dynamic modules.

There is no way to edit the regular expression of the dynamic content types from the Sitefinity Backend settings. It seems that the regular expression setting is hardcoded inside AdminApp implementation.

The root cause of the issue was due to a bug fix in the upgrade script for version 15.2.8400.0 that only changes the regex validation of fields that were previously created IF they were using the original regex. In this case the site is using the custom regex settings for the UrlName field of the dynamic modules.

Execute the following script to change the regular expression for the UrlName fields in dynamic modules.  The sample code can be executed in a web form that has a button that executes this method:

protected void ExecuteScript(object sender, EventArgs e)
{

    var moduleBuilderManager = ModuleBuilderManager.GetManager();

    var urlFields = moduleBuilderManager.Provider.GetDynamicModuleFields().Where(x => x.SpecialType == FieldSpecialType.UrlName);

    string previousDefaultRegularExpression = @"^[\p{L}\-_\.!~*'()\d]+$";

    foreach (DynamicModuleField urlField in urlFields)
    {
        urlField.RegularExpression = UrlValidationRegularExpression;
    }
    moduleBuilderManager.SaveChanges();
}

private const string UrlValidationAllowedCharactersRegex = @"\p{L}\-_\.!~*'()\d";
private const string UrlValidationRegularExpression = @"^[" + UrlValidationAllowedCharactersRegex + "]+(?<!\\.)$";
