Question/Problem Description

When an administrator runs the MOVEit installer, it fails. The debug log file shows an error reading from the stream.

This error may present outside of the context of an upgrade. For example, after upgrading Automation to version 15.0.1 it appeared to succeed but database query errors were found in the moveitc.log file afterwards. These errors could also happen during the restore process for Transfer using the dmzbackup utility.

Steps to Reproduce

Follow the resolution steps below, but ensure that the GPO is disabled instead of enabled. Run the MOVEit installer in upgrade or repair mode. Alternatively for MOVEit Transfer, use the dmzbackup and dmzrestore utilities to back up the application and then restore it.

Error Message

In the command prompt for the restore, or in the installer logs for installations, upgrades, and repairs: Authentication to host 'localhost' for user 'root' using method 'mysql_native_password' failed with message: Reading from the stream has failed Authentication to host 'localhost' for user 'root' using method 'caching_sha2_password' failed with message: Reading from the stream has failed. For the alternate scenario where errors occur post-upgrade, the error message was this: Database query error: 2043: Requested operation requires an OLE DB Session object, which is not supported by the current provider. If the following error is also present in the install logs, this could be pointing towards an issue with checking SSL certificates on MOVEit servers that are not open to the internet: 04:12:22 --- Std Error : Unhandled Exception: System.AggregateException: One or more errors occurred. ---> System.AggregateException: Authentication to host 'localhost' failed. ---> System.IO.IOException: I/O error occurred. The install logs may also show this error: CreateTables: SignalError: I couldn't open a connection to 'MOVEitDMZ'--is the ODBC DSN correct? --- End Std Error 15:10:56 Error: Failed to update the database tables.

Cause

A GPO policy blocks the ability of MOVEit to read the stored database password, causing problems during a restore, installation, or upgrade.

Alternatively, this error can show up along with an I/O error if the MOVEit server is not open to the internet and the needed CA certs are not available in the Root CA store on the server.

Resolution

1. Press Win+R to open the "Run" dialog.
2. Type "gpedit.msc" (without quotes) and press Enter.
3. In the "Local Group Policy Editor", expand "Computer Configuration", expand "Administrative Templates", expand "System", expand "Internet Communication Management", and then click "Internet Communication settings".
4. In the details panel, double-click "Turn off Automatic Root Certificates Update", click Enabled, then click OK. This change will be effective immediatelly without restart.
