Why does the RECID / ROWID function not fire the WRITE Trigger?

When working with foreign databases via an OpenEdge DataServer, the RECID / ROWID function will cause a newly created record to be written to the foreign database but it will not fire a WRITE trigger.

The VALIDATE and RELEASE statements do fire the WRITE trigger on a newly created record in a DataServer environment.

In order for the RECID or ROWID function to work, a RECID / ROWID must exist. When the RECID / ROWID is generated varies depending on the database type. For example,

The OpenEdge database writes a record to the database after all its indexed columns are assigned.
The MS SQL Server / Oracle DataServer writes records or record changes out to the database at the end of record scope or at the end of a transaction boundary within that record scope.

The result is that DataServer-based applications get the RECID / ROWID later than their OpenEdge counter-part.

In a DataServer environment, the RECID / ROWID function forces the write to the foreign database in order to create the RECID / ROWID value. When this occurs, the record is not validated in the process of calling the RECID or ROWID functions so therefore the WRITE trigger does not fire.

Both the VALIDATE and RELEASE statements do validate the records and therefore the WRITE trigger will fire.

When the WRITE trigger fires when the AVM changes the contents of a record and validates it for a particular database table.
