  • Hello Richard,

Adding the machine key configuration in the web.config file is a crucial step if you deploy a Sitefinity project to shared hosting. I would really suggest to follow the steps that are presented in the documentation so that you avoid any inconvenience while developing further a Sitefinity project.

  • Do you need to have a different machine key for two versions of the same site - ie. a staging site and a production site of the same domain?

    Thanks

  • Hi Anjeza

Ok, will do. Are there any instructions for where within the web.config file?

    Thanks

    Cheers

  • Oops, just seen it says where in the link - thanks
  • on the same server that is.
  • Hello,

Machine keys are used  for validation and encryption/decryption. Each site should have its machine key. They can be the same in the projects. There is no need to be different. However if you decide you could use different machine keys.  As it is explained in our documentation, to ensure that Sitefinity uses the same encryption key when running in load balancing, it is required that all web servers use the same machine key. Here there is a link which gives more explanation about machine keys.
