When installing Progress or OpenEdge to a Windows machine, the Progress installation utility will prompt the user for the installation group. This prompt is a request to determine which Program Folder (
Programs->Start menu) to install the Progress shortcut icons.
If another Progress installation is already present on the system, a distinction needs to be made between the existing Progress Program Group and the new Progress Program Group. When there is no distinction between the two Program Group names, the two Progress Program Groups share the same name. Icons from the original Progress installation will be overwritten by icons from the newest Progress installation.
Program Groups on Windows 8, 10 and Windows Server 2012Only the main category of Program Groups are displayed in the Apps View in Windows 8, 10 and Windows Server 2012. When the Program Group has a main category and the shortcuts are present in a subcategory within the main category (OpenEdge/117 ; OpenEdge/102B), in the Apps view, all the shortcuts in the sub-categories are directly listed under the main Program Group category (OpenEdge).
When different installations of OpenEdge (like 32-bit and 64-bit) exist, all the Program Groups are placed on Metro Interface without any categories, which makes it onerous finding the 32-bit or 64-bit shortcut icon. To avoid this:
- Remove sub-categories in the Program Groups and instead put the entire module name in the main Program Group category (OE11764; OE11732; OE102B64).
- During installation, specify a distinct name for the shortcut folder in each version. Each name should specify a single folder with no subfolder. Do not specify two folder names separated by a backslash.
