URL Name000033009
Article Number000151446
EnvironmentProduct: OpenEdge
Version: 10.x, 11.x
OS: All supported platforms
Question/Problem Description
VMWare snapshots are a feature included in VMWare 5.  These snapshots can be used to back up the whole system (O.S., file system, registry, etc) for the purposes of disaster recovery, and they can be taken while the OpenEdge runtime environment is being used.  Does Progress support this type of technology in any version?

In addition there is also a feature of VMWare 5 called VMCI ("Virtual Machine Communications Interface").  This feature allows two Virtual Machines on the same physical server, to communicate without going via the TCP/IP network.  Does Progress support this feature with VMWare 5?

PSC Product Management have commented that VMCI is supported for any VMWare version that is presently support by Progress Software.  If there are any problems related to this then please contact Customer Support and the matter will be investigated.

With regard to VMWare snapshots, this feature is not supported and would need to be included in a certification in order to change this.  If there is a need for this feature and there is a valid a business case for it, please submit the request to openedge-enhancements@progress.com.  This ensures a direct audience with Product Management for your ideas.

With VMWare support, in general, if PSC indicates that it is supported platform, this indicates a certain level of confidence that it will work and that any issues that arise will be addressed.  Progress supports Virtual Machines (VMs) to the extent that they represent the native OS environment.  If there are any extras (like snapshots) that the VMWare manufacturer adds then it is wise to get verification before committing to this technology.
